John, can you forward the email to me?

Well, what was the e-mail about, John? I don't know anything about it, but I don't want you to up and stop coming either. I'm guessing it was from someone in the LARP?

I got a rather disturbing e-mail today. If someone would please tell me whats going on I would be gratified to learn. Honestly, if I do not get an answer I am not going to be showing up anymore, and neither will the players I bring.

Stick it in your hind quarters. I don't have to listen to you or your lousy excuse for a Prince.

Anon    - Thursday, May 30, 2002 at 15:03:59 (EDT)

If you have something to say about the Prince, you have something to say about me. You have a problem with authority and I have a problem with you. Only a coward does not identify themselves!

A prince who supports criticism shouldn't be Prince!

Hey, take it from me, Anon. These constructive criticism meetings generally involve several stakes and the occassional flamethrower. I'd advise going to them only if you don't value your life. The true Prince has been exiled by this power hungry madman.

Anon, If you have a particular problem or grievance, please come to one of our meetings and make them known. I like constructive criticism.

My name is Edmund Marco and it's a pleasure to sign your guest book. I work for an advertising agency in London. Our agency represents direct marketing companies that are involved in the marketing of products as seen on TV in England. Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent!

I won't be there this weekend. The Detroit Electronic Music Festival calls, and this fat man is gonna boogie.

I agree with Dave. I hope the Owosso players return when they can. Also, durring the skip week it would be fun to go to the Owosso game. Please email Dave (Lotp@hotmail.com) for directions to the game. I have only been there once and do not remember the way.

Azure, I like your email address. I also enjoyed the Owosso plaers coming down last Saturday night. I had a lot of fun. I hope they weren't too put out by my staking "duffle bag boy" twice. :) It's just who the character is.

First off, I'd like to second Dave's comment that it was great that so many of the Owosso players showed up last game. I was pleasantly surprised, and it turned out well. I hope they decide to come back again. Secondly, I'd like to apologize for my being crazy at game. Life's a little.. shaky for me right now, and I'm extremely angry in general, and just manic-depressive as a result. Plus, the extreme headache I stumbled upon that night. I do plan to apologize to Vanessa (I don't know her real, OOC name) face-to-face this weekend, as I've heard I made her feel bad by walking off when her character was being hostile. I wasn't faulting her for it, because I know characters can be that way, and it had nothing to do with her. My own characters tend to be untrusting, violent, or whatever. I simply wasn't good at handling any form of hostility at that point, in character or out. I'll hopefully do better this Saturday. See you all then.

Mom,

if you shut down The Castle we'll just find someplace else to LARP. Just because some newbies wanna give our game a bad name doesn't mean that we are all doing it. What is it that you always ask me? If Sarah or Nicole jumped off a bride would I? No, I wouldn't. I have a brain.

Stop trying to run my life. - Brenda Walsh

Democratic Party of Lansing    - Thursday, May 09, 2002 at 14:10:11 (EDT)

Last week we reported on the strange controversy that has gripped East Lansing by the heart - LARP. LARP, which stands for Live Action Role-Playing, has become quite a phenomenon for ages 14 - 44. The game is designed to allow players to act as though they were someone else for five hours. Local parents who once supported the game and the children's decision to join it have now turned their backs on it. These actions stem from the violent sessions that have rocked the community in the past weeks. Parents just "aren't going to take it", said one outraged man who was at a city meeting last Saturday night while his son attended the LARP. The city meeting was called to assuage fears that the children were in danger. The city Mayor spoke out about the plan to keep on-duty officers present at the game sessions. The most interesting point of the meeting took place when a young woman in sunglasses stood up and addressed the Mayor. She asked very loudly, "What's Prince Stinky, you know Louis Cypher going to do about the game?" When the Mayor stammered and then asked who that was, she smiled and then turned and left. Reporters who tried to catch up to her on the steps of town hall but she refused to comment further. After her departure the Mayor was quoted as having said, "Even in the halls where we fight for the civil liberities of the youth, do they mock us. But, we shall not give up the fight. If we even reach one youth we will have succeeded!" LARPers were asked to respond to the angry parents. "We have players of all ages. Our parents are welcome to come to a game any time they want. We encourage them to do it. If they want to derride our choices then they will have to understand them first. Yes, it is true that we act as if we were monsters. There is a monster inside everyone and by playing the beast you release tension and anger. If you don't you get a situation like Columbine. If that's what [parents] want then [parents] should keep up the protests, they should keep up the fight. Everybody plays pretend - When you cheat on your spouse you pretend it didn't happen, when you overeat because you are depressed you pretend it doesn't matter, and when you protest what we are doing you pretend to understand!" - Name Withheld LARPer Events continue to heat up. LARP continues to run and parents and lawmakers fight to decide who is right.

Be prepared! I make my return after being out of LARP for two weeks. This weekend, things are going to start getting very interesting (or at least it would be cool if they did get interesting.) So let's get out there Saturday night and... have some fun.

IMAGINARY FRIENDS GONE BAD. A spotlight has been put on Live Action Role-Playing lately with the events that have taken place at Castle Comics in East Lansing. Concerned parents have written to the Store Owner condeming the improvisational game. But, parents are not the only ones who are concerned about this group. A small independant game company called Spin Enterprises recently sued the LARP for using copyrighted material without permission. They go to court in June over the matter. The LARP has petitioned the East Lansing police's outreach program. At every session police officers will be stationed at the store to prevent any violent activity by non-players. The "LARPers", as they call themselves, insist that the actions that have plagued the store have only been the result of misguided people. They advocate for freedom of expression. "By playing as Vampires or Werewolves we are exploring our minds. We know that these monsters do not exist. A vampire is the dark side of human nature and Werewolves are the internal rage we all feel", said the Head Storyteller. Both sides have made their point clear. We will be following this story as it unfolds over the course of the month until the trial.

When I think of Role-playing I think of building skills and walking through situations in order to prepare better for the future. I am not quite sure if I understand what my son is doing on Saturday nights at a comic book store. He says that it is like improv theater. I am writing this because my concern is that this is not healthy. He has come home repeatedly complaining of cheating and role-played violence. The goal when he started to go was to make friends and have fun. How interacting with others by role-playing violent scenes and having to outwit cheaters is fun I will never know. My son has often accused me of speaking out against things I don't understand. I am speaking now because I want to understand them. I demand that parents understand why this LARP is allowed to continue in the face of so much danger to our children. My plea - Close the Castle LARP for good. Let the children watch TV. I can explain violence on the television! Mrs. Charlotte Dawntane
